Fun in the Sun!

Summer has finally arrived in Perth! After what seemed like the longest winter on record, it is wonderful to feel the heat of the sun on our faces!

We love to get down to the beach as much as possible over summer. Not only is the beach a great place to catch up with friends and relax but is also provides the ideal opportunity for some challenging workouts. The soft sand offers resistance that make simple task quite hard while the harder sand down by the water’s edge is perfect for a long slow beach run.

Get together a bunch of friends, grab a soccer ball and some water and head down to the sand for some beach soccer.

Set up some rules for the game. Make it that every time someone scores a goal each person drops and does:

10 push ups

10 mountain climbers

10 squats

A short sprint

The next time a goal is scored do:

1 minute plank

10 burpees

All times 2

Alternate these exercises for the whole game and you will get a good workout!

Running along the water’s edge is a wonderful way to spend your time. The gently breaking waves are very soothing and offer a great opportunity for some quiet reflection. Just remember that running on the beach is tough on your calves, so don’t go crazy. Keep your first beach run to 5km or less, otherwise you won’t be able to walk the next day!

And, as always, if you are out in the sun remember to slip, slop, slap and stay hydrated. Get out there and enjoy the feeling of the warm sand between your toes, while having fun and getting in a workout!
