Spring into Action

When the weather warms up, rain starts to fade and days get longer, it's spring—and the best time of the year to take your fitness regimen outside.

Here are 5 benefits of exercising outside:

1. You work harder

When people exercise outside, they tend to spend more time doing it. A recent study found that people who trained outdoors did at least 30 minutes more moderate-to-vigorous physical activity a week than those who only worked out inside.

2. It makes you feel healthier.

Nothing makes you feel more alive that running around outside on a beautiful spring morning. It modulates stress hormones, increases endorphins and increases serotonin secretion, boosting your mood and making you feel better.

3. Lowers blood pressure

Being outside is good for the heart. A recent study estimated that nearly 10% of people with high blood pressure could get their levels under control if they spent at least 30 minutes in a park each week.

4. It’s fun!

When you are outside in the sun, you feel better and enjoy the exercise more. Enjoyment plays an important part in the mental health impacts of physical activity. Research has found that people who exercised outside felt less tension, anger and depression.

5. Improves your mental health

Nature has a way of making people feel calm, and exercising outside can strengthen that effect. Nature becomes a major distraction from all the stresses of life.
