Have You Tried Healthy Living?

Being healthy is not a boot camp; it is a lifestyle. The road to achieving a healthy body and mind is hard and requires planning and a realistic, positive attitude.  By setting realistic goals and celebrating your successes, you can enjoy living a healthy life.

A healthy life begins with a realistic plan.  Assess where you are and define your goals.  Do you want to lower your cholesterol by a certain number of points or lose 40 pounds?  Do you want to exercise at least 4 times per week?  Having a clear set of goals will help you create a plan that can be achieved.  Vague goals such as losing weight are moving targets and are harder to achieve.  Once you have your goals in mind, research how your body works.  Carbohydrates are immediate energy while the body stores proteins and slowly releases them for long-term energy.  Your research will help you define your action plans for meeting your goals.  Based on your goals and research, create your plan with things that you enjoy.  If you like swimming, then make swimming a part of your exercise routine.  If you love spicy food, then make cooking with flavorful spices but lower kilojoules a part of your meal plan.

As you implement your plan and start changing your daily activities your body and life will start to change.  Change is a gradual process.  It may help to keep records of your activities.  Track the number of miles you walked or the amount of time you spent hitting the heavy bag.  Do not track the items listed as your goals every day.  Check in on these items no more than once per week.  As you keep records, you can see your achievements and get immediate satisfaction.

More important than the best laid plans is your attitude.  You may make mistakes.  You may stray from your plan for a week or so.  Your progress will be gradual.  Your results will take time.  It’s important to acknowledge and understand these things from the start.  Maintaining a positive, persistent attitude will help you stay on track or get back to your plan when you stray.  Congratulate yourself as you reach small goals.  Each small goal is a step closer to your larger goal of a healthy life.
