The 12 days of FITNESS!

Don’t let all your hard work over the year go to waste this Christmas. Our 12 days of Fitness will help keep you on track, ready for 2017!

Day 1: Give presents that get people moving!

Scooters, skates, backyard cricket sets or fitness games like tennis on the Wii, are great ways to get people up and moving – providing the perfect opportunity for you to join them!

Day 2: Break it down

The holidays can fill up with commitments very quickly, meaning you don’t have big blocks of time to exercise. During very periods break your exercise down into small intense sessions. 10 minutes when you get up, 10 minutes at lunch and 10 minutes when you get home in the evening. Studies have found that short sessions like these are still effective.

Day 3: Set a new goal and enter an event

Paying the entry fee for an event is a great motivator to help you stay on track, stopping you from overindulging in Aunty Jean’s trifle. There are plenty of sporting events held over the Christmas period too, check your local websites for more information.

Day 4: Avoid overpouring the booze!

Alcohol is one of the easiest ways to over-indulge this Christmas, and let’s face it, sometimes it can be hard to say no. Just remember to stick to standard pours and drink plenty of water in between each drink.

Day 5: Go for HIIT

Time constraints don’t have to be a negative. Mix up your workouts by focusing on some high intensity interval training and get the most out of a shorter workout. Crank up some Christmassy tunes and get your sweat on.

Day 6: Shop hard

I know it sounds funny, but walking around the shops buying presents can be a good anaerobic workout! Walking up and down the shopping centre carrying heavy bags is a great way of upping your incidental exercise.

Day 7: Relax

Having downtime is an important part of staying healthy and fit. It reduces your stress levels and allows you to fully recover from your other training.

Day 8: Get to the beach

Pack a bag, call your family and head to the beach for a swim, beach run or an impromptu game of cricket. Salt water is a great way to de-stress. Remember to apply sunscreen and drink plenty of water.

Day 9: Combine eating out with exercise

If you have plans for a meal with friends park a further away and enjoy a 20 minute walk to the restaurant. After you’ve eaten, that 20 minute walk back to your car will help speed up the digestion process.

Day 10: Organise a treasure hunt

Get the kids outside and have some fun. Forget about Pokemon Go, write an old-fashioned treasure map and hide clues around a park. All that running around adds up to a great way to work off Christmas pudding and the kids in your life will love you spending time with them.

Day 11: Throw a Boxing Day picnic

The perfect way to use up all those Christmas left-overs, chuck in the cricket set, a football or some bocce and enjoy yourself!

Day 12: Stay focused

It’s fine to enjoy yourself and indulge – that what Christmas is all about, but keep your eyes focused on your goals. Moderation is the key.

Ask yourself, do I really want it?

Christmas is a wonderful time. Kick back, relax and enjoy!
